In memory of Mervyn Edwards
1940 – 2025
C64 & C7
Mervyn passed away from his lengthy battle with cancer on Friday 19th September. He leaves his beloved wife Bronwan, son and grandchildren.
I came to know Mervyn when C35 merged with Colin’s circle to form what is now C7. Mervyn joined the UPP in 2007 - I must admit I thought he had been here for years. He was one of those friendly, helpful photographers from day one. A joy to know.
Mervyn started photography from the age of 11 and got his first camera and film at 12 which was a box brownie. Many times he turned the home bathroom into a darkroom to his mothers annoyance! He said he used the see-saw method to develop his images.
For many years he was a Canon user but in the later years he moved to Olympus and loved the ability of the camera in such a small size. He even treated himself to an OM1 but never really got to enjoy it.
Mervyn was a dedicated camera club member - firstly with Winchester Photographic Society and in later years moving to his local village club Wonston & Worthys Camera Club. He was also a member of his local historic camera club.
His big passion was steam trains and he spent many a fond day away with his friend from the U3A Railway Group visiting many railways across the UK. He loved his local Watercress Line. He also spent much of his time with model railways and enjoyed doing the odd video as well.

Mervyn survived to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife and the best man from their wedding.
He did have some good news in his final weeks - Winchester Council recognised his work documenting the flora of a local field. His work is now on permanent display.
I will miss Mervyn and his wonderful wit and great images. He will be a great loss to the UPP.
